CDC has released the 2026 update to the Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Threats in the United States (AR Threats Report), the agency’s most comprehensive assessment of the impact of drug-resistant bacteria and fungi on human health in the United States. The report reiterates that drug-resistant infections remain an urgent national threat, with a combined 9.7 million infections and 50,800 deaths in 2023 alone.
Among the 19 pathogens in the report that are categorized as urgent, serious, or concerning to human health in the United States are drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae) and drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Drug-resistant TB is one of 13 serious threats in the report.
Essential programs within CDC’s Division of STD Prevention and Division of TB Elimination monitor these threats and provide clinical consultations for hard-to-treat cases.
